Trends on the Horizon for Online Games and Players

The online gaming industry is always in a state of flux, with changes coming thick and fast as the demands made by players shift in the blink of an eye. This means that tips and tricks can become obsolete faster than a day-old burrito.

Trying to foresee these trends is incredibly difficult, although there are hints that show themselves if people look carefully enough.

Here we delve into what some of the online gaming trends of the future could be, as we try to predict where this ever-burgeoning industry could be headed next.

Gamers are always on the lookout for the next big thing or technological advance that can take their gaming experiences to the next level

US Opening Its Doors to New Types of Online Games

North America and Asia have long been in a battle for supremacy when it comes to which continent boasts the best games development companies, Esports teams, and gaming stars.

One of the things that has held the US back at times has been certain games remaining inaccessible due to state legislation. Signs are that this is now changing, with classic card games being given the go-ahead in states like New Jersey, Delaware, Nevada and most recently Michigan. This is one trend that seems only set to proliferate in the months and years to come, as online gamers demand the freedom to indulge in whatever games they want to.

Mobile Gaming Only Set to Grow

Another trend that has certainly built up a head of steam in recent years is people playing their favorite games via their mobile devices.

This has been made possible by new and powerful coding languages which mean a game can easily be adapted to perform at 100% no matter whether it is being played on PC, tablet, or mobile.

Something else which has boosted the mobile gaming trend are the numerous gaming accessories that can be attached to a mobile phone, turning it into a de facto controller or small scale console.

With the rise of powerful 5G networks around the globe, mobile gaming will suddenly become more formidable than ever before, as 5G should allow for quicker and more interconnected gameplay no matter where a player is located.

zombie gamer concentrates

Mobile gaming is one trend that appears set to stay for the long term as mobile devices become evermore powerful and capable of performing like consoles or PCs.

VR and AR Will Become Mainstream

After the runaway success of games like Pokémon Go, it was expected that the AR gaming revolution would gather pace at lighting speed. Unfortunately, that has not quite happened, as a lack of suitable games and doubts about data protection have held AR games back.

There is still no doubt that such games will play a huge part in the future of the gaming landscape, however. Allied to AR games will be the increasing visibility of VR games. This is especially true now that many VR headsets and hand controllers are completely wireless, and often only require a mobile phone to load a game from, rather than an expensive PC or console.

While VR technology and the games that come with it are still something of an online gaming niche, there is no doubt that both VR and AR will be incorporated into virtually all games in the near to long-term future.

Players Become Content Creators and Games Developers

Streaming platforms like YouTube Gaming and Twitch have long encouraged gamers to branch out and become broadcasters, entertainers, and the industry’s taste makers.

There are now signs that this is being taken a few steps further by online streaming legends, as men like Dr Disrespect go about developing their very own games, using their experience to partner with a studio to create the perfect title.

Players should expect far more of these sorts of collaborations, as the lines between consumer and producer become ever more blurred.

DIABLO III PTR 2.7.1 has Launched

DIABLO III PTR 2.7.1

Blizzard's two-week PTR (Public Test Realm) testing period for the 2.7.1 update begins June 17 and they are asking you to help stem surging demons before they take over! Take a look at the preliminary patch notes below, start working out how you'll make the most of Ethereals when Patch 2.7 arrives; and don't forget, it won't be long until these changes are live in game!

PTR 2.7.2 Table of Contents

Please note that this is a preview for PTR content, which is subject to change depending on testing and feedback.

DIABLO III PTR 2.7.1 focus & details

PTR Focus and Details

Blizzard will be conducting the Patch 2.7.1 PTR over the course of two weeks, starting Thursday, June 17. During this time there may be periodic maintenances, outages, hotfixes, or minor patches - this is what the testing period is supposed to identify and fix.

  • As you explore the vast lands of Diablo III, be prepared for exciting new challenges and rewards! Fight your way through hordes upon hordes of demons to earn unique buffs that will help lead you on quests. There will be three buffs that are unique to PTR 2.7.2 created to help you on your journey: increased Legendary drop rate, increased experience gains, and double Blood Shard drops. You can also buy new gear for testing from the special PTR vendor, Djank Mi'em, who will exchange Blood Shards for class-specific bags full of Legendary items and Ethereals
  • Class and Balance Changes: Blizzard are excited to announce the changes coming to three of our most popular sets, namely Inna's Mantra (Monk), Aegis of Valor (Crusader) and Masquerade of Burning Carnival for Necromancer. The recent patches have brought a lot more maturity to skillsets that were quite underpowered in comparison with other available classes' abilities. In this PTR, Blizzard are looking at amending some significant problems within these set bonuses or providing them new options that will make it easier for anyone playing those characters/classes not only feel confident but also competitive against their peers as well! Keep an eye out before going into battle - you might just find something exciting waiting there!!
  • New Season Theme Testing: As always, in this test realm Blizzard is looking to gather feedback on the seasonal theme content featuring Ethereals.

Don't forget you can feedback in the Blizzard PTR Feedback forum while bug reports should be provided in the PTR Bug Report forum.

Realm Testing Tips

With a short testing period, it is best to hit the ground running. Whether you are a PTR veteran or newcomer, we have some tips for getting started: - Make sure your system meets these specs before downloading and installing PTR client - Choose an installation location that's easy to find so other players don't mistakenly download from their computer instead of Blizzard Servers when they're looking for updates in Battle net app.

  • Blizzard asks players who want to participate in this short-lived PTR, focus their attention on a particular portion of this update.
    • For example, if you're mostly a Wizard player, think about what changes impact the Wizard specifically. Wizards are a class that can be difficult to play well, but they have many unique strengths. One of the most important skills for Wizard players is combat and tactics planning because Wizards do not rely on dodging or blocking abilities like other classes do. The best way to find success as a wizard player is by focusing more on defensive strategy than offensive strategies during battle in order to stay alive longer so you don't die before your enemies expire
  • To make sure you have everything needed for PTR, it's recommended to stock up on some Puzzle Rings and Bovine Bardiches before the start. After importing your character into an account with PTR enabled, these items can be used for quick farming of loot or time-saving buffs while testing out new classes in low level content!
  • Blizzard are encouraging players to experiment by breaking things so that they know what needs fixing ahead of launch day.
  • When giving feedback about changes made always mention how they've affected you - did something seem off? Did something lack enough detail? Blizzard need to hear your suggestions for us to let our team know first if there are bugs present!

DIABLO III PTR 2.7.1 patch notes

Patch Notes

Here are the patch notes for the upcoming update for Diablo III, Patch 2.7.1.

PATCH 2.7.1

Table of Contents:

Note: All changes apply to all versions of Diablo III, including PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC unless otherwise indicated.

Seasons

Developer's Note: Diablo II caused a storm when it was released more than 20 years ago, and Blizzard would like to introduce a feature to honor that legacy. For this seasonal theme, the inspiration took shape by reimagining how Ethereal items in Diablo II could manifest in Diablo III. In Season 24 of Diablo III, these rare weapons are powerful but fleeting because they only last for 1 hour per use! There are 21 iconic weapons from Diablo II making a return including their own unique effects such as life steal or critical hit chance boosts which allow you greater freedom during battle while maintaining your edge over enemies at all times - just make sure not to die before using them up since there is no guarantee on where another one will appear next time round!

New Season Theme:Season 24 will be the first time in a decade that gamers will be able to acquire an entirely new weapon-type called Ethereals. These powerful weapons have randomly generated affixes, as well as either one of two random Class Weapon Legendary Power or Class Passive Power - two of five different possible Passive Power types. The developers at Blizzard Entertainment are excited about this because it adds quite a bit more variety than what was present before and allows for further exploration into Diablo II's iconic soundtracks which originally inspired these unique powers with their own original icons, names, item types, and sounds! Check out this list :

  • Ethereals are account-bound and can only be dropped by monsters, chests, or destructibles but do not require your character to be level 70 in order for them to drop. They cannot also come from Kanai’s Cube nor Kadala the Diablo 3 Auction House.
  • Ethereal rarity drop rate is set between Ancient and Primal items.
  • In this Season, there are 3 unique Ethereals per class. Each Ethereal has fixed affixes and rolls one random Legendary Weapon power and one random Class Passive Skill.
  • Only one Ethereal can be equipped at a time.
  • Ethereals ignore item durability loss.
  • Legendary Powers and Class Passive Skills rolled on Ethereals do not stack with the same power equipped through Kanai's Cube, Items or Skills.
  • Ethereals cannot be Enchanted, Transmogrified, Dyed, Reforged, or traded.
  • Ethereals can be augmented.
  • Collecting all 21 Ethereals during Season 24 will reward players with the Feat of Strength, Ethereal Recollection. Players who accomplish this will have all Ethereal transmogrify options available for future seasonal and non-seasonal play.
  • Ethereals only drop in Seasonal play, and will not transfer to your non-seasonal character when the season ends.

Season Rewards: Two unique new rewards, a portrait frame, and a pet will be granted to players who complete the Season 24 Guardian Journey. Please note that the reward content will not be available during PTR 2.7.1.

Developer's Note: Inna's Mantra played similarly to other Monk sets and didn't have a strong identity. We want to see the Mystic Ally play a more important role, rather than simply providing a passive power boost.

  • Aegis of Valor 2-Piece Set: Attacking with Fists of the Heavens empowers you, allowing Heaven's Fury to deal 125% increased damage for 5 seconds. Stacks up to 3 times.

  • Step 2: Log into PTR client and create a level 1 character. After you're done, return to the main character screen.

Then Boss Mode and Worlds Apart are right up your street. Divinity and Lionhearted are also making a comeback, if challenging Greater Rifts are more your thing. Finally, if you're keen to prove your mastery of various Class Sets, Masters of the Universe and Masters of Sets also made a comeback in Season 23.

Season 23 - Haedrig's Gift

Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for successfully completed selected chapters in the Season Journey courtesy of Haedrig's Gift were rotated once again. We've listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons in Daiblo III, here's a short tutorial:

If you complete Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of the Season Journey, you are rewarded you with three of Haedrig's Gifts. These Gifts contain three pieces from one of your Class Sets. Players can only unlock one Class Set per Season across Hardcore and Non-Hardcore, so choose your gifts wisely! The set you receive depends on the class of the character you're playing when you open each Haedrig's Gift. To collect a full Class Set, you'll need to open all three on the same character. Here are the Class Sets granted by Haedrig's Gift in Season 23:

  • Monk - Raiment of a Thousand Storms
  • Demon Hunter - Unhallowed Essence
  • Crusader - Roland's Legacy
  • Wizard - Tal Rasha's Elements
  • Barbarian - Wrath of the Wastes
  • Witch Doctor - Helltooth Harness
  • Necromancer - Bones of Rathma
