Sometimes when I salvage rares(in inferno), I would get different mats varying from run to run. For example, a rare Desolator Wand(iLvl63) gave me Hell mats once. On another occasion, a rare Arreat Axe(iLvl58) gave me Hell mats one run and Inferno mats on another. Has this been happening to anyone else?

Getting Inconsistent Mats from Salvaging?

This happens if the item has "reduced level requirements"
For some odd reason the people at blizz decided in one of the patches that reduced level req should salvage in this way. It was in the patch notes, but can't remember where. 1.06 or somesuch. |

You also have a % chance to get a brim on ilvl 60 rare items and above don't you? Had this happen but looked around on b.net site but couldn't find stats anywhere.

@ninjax
Yip. Rares have like a 0.1% chance to give a brim, at least, that's what the site says So far I have received 1 brim from a rare. And I have salvaged far more than a 1000 rare items. |

Ahhhh, the reduced lvl req would explain it. I think the items tend to give mats depending on the required lvl so that would make sense. Thx @Bort

It depends on the required lvl and not on the item lvl.
So if you get an item with rolls on every stat lower than 60 the required lvl will be 58 or 59. These and the reduced lvl requirement will give hell mats. I always look at the required lvl to decide if vendor or salvage. |

This might explain why some magic items are giving me the wrong essences. |
