This morning I looked up the auction house (EU) for some doom hammers and I got rewarded with this beauty.



I had around 1.91 billion gold left and decided (to try) to maxbid it. I put my bid (1.91) and left for university, however I didn't know that I failed miserably. Eventually, when I came home, I noticed that i got outbid...

You may insult me now... :D

yeah, it happened to me once too, but luckily i found a better deal later. Reddit has a good explanation - basically you need to put in the 2B Max Bid on an item without a buyout, then have someone else with a good chunk of change bid 1.905B to get the Current Bid to appear. At this point, no one can bid higher because it goes above the 2B cap, and you saved yourself just under 100M.
