How Does Blizz Determine the Suggested Opening Bid

Sometimes (do to lag) I can't play the game but the AH works just fine. What I do in these times is buy stuffs that are selling for less than their vender redemption value and then vender them. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Why does Blizz even let this happen? Why wouldn't the opening bid at least be the vender value? Not complaining, just curious?

Just tested, and Blizz does indeed initially suggested a lower than vender value at least on commodities...

It is better to sell commodities to the vendor than on the AH unless it is a tome of Jewelcrafting, after the deduction in crafting prices for flawless squares they shot up to 2k each but are now down to about like maybe 100 gold each. Everything else I would say sell in bulk if you don't plan on crafting. And as for ilvl60-63 blues, if they sell to the vendor for more than 400 gold, salvage them and sell the essence for more on the AH or keep it.
