I've given up on my fool's quest to earn any more money through the RMAH and so I'm looking for the last scraps of fun I can get out of a pre-expansion D3. If Blizzard really wants a game where they can encourage people not to use the AH, why not create a ladder server without an AH? Each patch just brings the game closer to D2, anyway, and this is another feature I would love to see brought back.
Here's what I'm thinking. They add 1 or 2 characters slot to each account depending upon whether they would create both a SC and HC ladder server. They create one class-specific Legendary for each class in each Ladder season primarily as a usable, but not BiS collectible. They could just be a palette swap of a current Legendary with new stats for all I care. At the end of each ladder season, it works like it did with D2 where the characters are dropped into their normal servers. All Gold and stash inventory disappears. Character gear and inventories will remain. Everyone gets two weeks' notice there will be a ladder reset which will cause an insane flurry of people trading their Ladder Gold for items and other people using Ladder gold to craft like there's no tomorrow (since there istomorrow). The flood of new items would annihilate the SC/HC AH for a few weeks after each reset, but you gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelette. Obsessive collectors are happy, because they get to keep a stash page on the normal server with each ladder's unique Legendaries. The fansites get a big bump in traffic for each reset. The budget build scene explodes with the first ladder since there are a lot of builds that simply don't work without high-end Legendaries. It would even let some players be merchant tycoons building up their fortune each cycle by looking for advtangeous trades. Even better! Make each ladder reset add a single item of a 4-item class set. The first ladder contains, say, a mighty weapon for the Barb, a Spirit Stone for the Monk and so on. The next ladder adds a Helm for the Barb and a Belt for the Monk. Every 2-3 months, a new set item gets released onto the normal server. After 8-12 months, each class has a new, relatively OP 4-piece set. Given the power creep that will occur over 12 months, anyway, a set that's OP now is going to be only usable in 12 months. Hell, they could do the limited-release 4-piece set item thing right now. Each Class of set items will drop in only one Act, but they all drop in that same act. They could change it as quickly as every 2-3 weeks with 4 repeat rotations in all (4 set items * 2 weeks * 4 rotations = 32 weeks). Then those items would (a) never drop again (b) a guarantee not drop for at least 2 years (c) all start dropping immediately. They could do the swaps completely unannounced, too. Maybe the hotfix changes it, maybe it doesn't. Why don't they do this right now? I want this right now! This was off the top of my head. People must have more and better ideas. |

I'll sign on for this. Great idea.

if they are going to introduce AH-less Ladders, they need to beef up the drops with at least 10%
