Been away since before 1.08. What are some of the efficient routes (areas) to use now to power level?

Kinda.. but the monsters are different. In Act 1 I avoid all areas with Savage Beasts who charge you & have a boatload of HP. Weeping Hollows is a must after your 5 stack.
Generally I do Festering for 3-4 stacks, get remaining on Fields & Warden, Weeping Hollows and finish off going to Leorics Manor and running through Halls of Agony from level 1 through to kill Butcher. Rinse repeat. |

Cathedral level 1 and sometimes 2 is pretty chunky as of late, and everybody is doing decay crypt in fields if it's there
