does anyone know the reason why chipped gems (the level-1 gems) are so expensive?
sometimes, they're as expensive (if not more) as the level-8 gems you loot in Inferno. does it have to do with an exploit in the game? bot money laundering? I googled and there were 2 threads in the official forums that quickly got deleted (google cache as well) |
prices of chipped gems

I have been curious about this too and could not come to any real conclusion other than perhaps people are just taking advantage of new players who see chipped drop all the time and proceed to go check the auction house for that gem? Honestly it makes no sense why they cost so much.

it could be that some players are cornering the market... buying ALL the supply, then using another account to buy a few every day to manipulate the stats that say how much it traded the day before.
BUT who would fall for it? who would buy from them? I am sure many will check the prices of the higher level gems before making any purchase. there must be some kind of exploit involving these gems, which explains why Blizzard quickly deletes threads talking about this. |

I'm with Anuiran in thinking it's new players. I sell them when I'm leveling my other characters through normal. I guess I shouldn't be taking advantage of the newbies.

so they sell quickly for you, Ecocd?
I can't believe n00bs fall for this and don't check the other gems prices. |

They sell overnight, anyway. There's always a buyer for anything, it seems. I could see not even bothering to check the price of gems above if you're new. In D2 there were level requirements on gems. I didn't notice that they weren't capped in D3 until I was already collecting the 3rd level gems. If I were using the Auction house when I first started, I probably would've done the same thing.
