From Offiicial API documentation, it's confirmed that the officially probability of a ilvl 61+ Magic item salvaging into a Fiery Brimstone is 0.0001577287.

I guess my odds of getting that Leoric's is better than I had hoped...
I've gotten close to ten of these over the course of playing.

SWEET!!

@ecocd That link apears to be broken...

@Baldy Do you salvage all of your 61+? I salvage any 61+ under 1000 Gold, because I've been futilely trying to craft better armor one Exalted Grand Cloak at a time. I haven't gotten a single Fiery Brimstone from salvage, but I'm only salvaging a fraction of them.

The link is still working for me, so here it is in plain text: http://blizzard.github.com/d3-api-docs/

By looking at the information for my 1H xbow, we can see that rare items have a 0.001 chance of salvaging a Brimstone. It doesn't matter if it's ilvl 61, 62 or 63. I have noticed from personal experience that ilvl 60 jewelry and Follow gear will salvage into Exquisite Essences, so those likely also have a small chance to salvage into Brimstones.

It's an interesting comparison to Leoric. You appear to have salvaged an unusually high percent of items to have salvaged 10 Brimstones from magic and rare items. I'm wondering if they've changed that probability across patches. I'll have to wait until my profile online catches up with my character in game to get some recent probabilities.

According to that page, the probability of salvaging a Brimstone from a magic item is precisely 1/6340 (why the heck would Blizzard choose that number exactly?). This means to have a 50% chance of salvaging at least 1 Brimstone from a Magic item, you would have to salvage 4395 Magic items. You would have to salvage 693 rare items to have a 50% chance of getting a Brimstone.

Edit: I have verified that the probability of getting a Brimstone from a magic item is still 1 / 6340.

I would say that I have gotten no less than 7 over the course of playing. Whenever I run, I pick up just about every 60+ that drops. Rare or otherwise.

I meant do you salvage them or sell them? I pick them up, but I salvage anything worth less than a 1000 Gold vend price and sell anything that's worth at least 1000 gold.

I always sell them just because I don't want to take the time to salvage

So one out of 6340 lvl 60+ items will salvage into a 200k (or cheaper now) brimstone.

Even if they only sell for 500 gold each, by selling you would have made 3m.

So lesson learned, don't salvage lol.

Brimstones have been under 100k this weekend so they add all of 85 gold in expected value to a rare so you don't salvage for the possibility of a Brimstone, but that was never a good reason. You salvage for the Exquisite Essences which hover between 800-900. If you're crafting items, then you don't have to buy the Essences from the AH so salvage everything under 800 Gold. If a magic item would sell for less than 680 Gold then you're losing money by Vending it instead of salvaging it.

Before the 1.04 hype, Essences were dipping into the 500 Gold range which meant it never made sense to salvage. I have no idea who was salvaging anything to sell them at that point.

I salvage them mostly unless I am low on funds. I did that for about a week when I sold everything that was over the essence cost that moment. Its this salvaging that has gotten me a handful of brims...I may even have some screenies tucked away somewhere. Ill try and dig them out and Ill post them.

Here is the screen shot of one of the fiery brimstones I salvaged. I thought I had more but I must have deleted them all.

@Baldy I didn't doubt that you got them. I just wondered if I wasn't salvaging as often as you. If you're running Act 3, you're getting twice as many to salvage as me, as well. I wish you continued luck!

Haven't salvaged a single rare in quite some time. I haven't done the math on this, but it doesn't seem to make any sense to me. First, you have to make sure you don't salvage anything above the EE value. If you are crafting, this will be higher (because the value would be its buyout price in the case for crafters), but overall, it's pretty low (like 750-800). That's already really low (most rares are going to be higher than that to sell to the vendor). You have to consider the time it takes to sort these, walk to the vendor, and then also move EEs to the stash at some point. I realize this time isn't that much, but it does add up over prolonged runs.

Also, I don't pick up blues and I haven't picked any of them up in quite awhile. 99.9% of them have no value on AH and the ones that do are so far and few between AND their value will also be minimal. I actually don't even look at blues with the CTRL function.

It's pretty sad, but if crafting even the legendaries is this bad, then EEs/Brimstones really have no value. There doesn't seem to be much parity between crafting and just farming items as fast as possible.

I typically do run act III. As far as the reason for the pic post, I didn't think you were doubting me, I was just bragging. ;-)

I've only got one of this but now that the prices for the essences are so low I don't salvatage rares so often.

Yea, I use to salvage rares but with commodity prices so low now, its just easier to sell all of the junk rares.
