Has anyone found a decent place to farm gems? Before 1.04 I used to farm the hoarder at the begining of act 1 but he seems to not drop nearly as often.

Gems?

Treasure seekers drop a lot, with a puzzle ring I think you'd find a lot more gems.....

I think you can farm them pretty well by killing white mobs quickly. The faster you kill the better. So I would go for high mob density of easy to kill mobs. I would think festering woods or cursed hold in act 1. Maybe even act 2, if you can farm it quickly, Vault of the Assassin. I have good luck in there.

This is a good question. I haven't found anything regarding Treasure Classes. I believe Skeletons can drop Gems and are pretty fragile. That would make Cursed Hold (no quick way to get there, unfortunately) and a number of Act 2 locations a good place to farm (Zoltan Kulle should have ready access to them). Can anyone confirm Gems dropping from skeletons, particularly Act 2? Those would be my best suggestion.

So the short answer is there really isn't a good farming local.

Rakkis has always been good to me, but not since the patch.

From what I can remember they are in the same class as tomes and such. They should be able to drop from anything you kill. I have found chests that have dropped several before and I have killed Treasure Goblins to get them. As far as I know, MF and GF do not affect gem drop rates. Sorry for the lack of definitive answer.

Is it possible to find gems better than Flawless Square or they can only be crafted?

Only crafted. |

I also get the majority of my gems from Act 1 runs. |

I don't think odds vary by enemy type, so any place with a lot of densely packed enemies should be good.

@funkyfritter Upon examination of (Diablo Lexicon that's pretty much right. Their monster database lists a Treasure Class ID for each monster. The vast majority fall into the same Treasure Class, but there are a few differences. Oppressors definitely drop differently than Vile Swarms so they would have different probabilities of gems dropping (we don't know what that is), but Vile Swarms drop the same as Skeletons. All champions share the same Treasure Class which is different from white mobs. The mini bosses and act bosses have their own Treasure Classes so not only do they drop more items, they'll drop a different distribution of items than white mobs. I wonder if Zoltun Kulle has a tendency to drop more gems than the average monster...
Interestingly, The Butcher has a Treasure Class for "Rare" which means at some point, Blizzard anticipated The Butcher's character model to be reused for champion packs later in the game. |
