What to "look for" in selling an item on GAH/RMAH

With the idea that we have a fluid market and things change, I would like to see a list of what attributes an item "needs" to make it worth while selling on the GAH/RMAH. Maybe its something we can sticky in the Price Check area - or even here as I personally tend to spend more time here than the price check forum as I keep this forum up in the bakcground when I'm playing.

I bring this up as I set a sale price for some boots on the RMAH of $2.00, first being told they were worth maybe 500k-1M Gold. The boots sold seconds after listing ~ and I found out afterwards they would have gone for $15-$20. I get the pricing part that I was wrong there, but evidently these boots were much more valuable then I thought as I didn't take into account the value of one of the attributes.

While I've gotten better the more I've played, I've also over the last few days I've three issues trying to sell things.

#1 I've had too few items sell at what I thought was reasonable
#2 Then when I set the auction to a min bid of 100 gold it doesn't even sell, so that really tells me that I'm missing out on things.
#3 Then I set a low price on an item to try and just move it and it gets snapped up as soon as it hits the auction house, thus knowing that I didn't get a good price on it if a bot bought it 10 seconds after it went up for sale.

So - what say you guys - anybody want to take a crack at it?

Thanks in advance.

I've actually got something pretty extensive in the works for this, because you're not the first to have asked. The full first draft is complete so this isn't an ethereal idea that won't ever happen. If it doesn't go up as a Guide, it'll go up as a thread at some point. I know that doesn't help you right now, but there is something on the horizon.

In the meantime, you can easily price check for yourself. Take the stats you see on it, take off a little and search on them in the Auction House. You probably won't find an exact match so instead put in 4 of the 5 stats until you get a feel for what other people are asking. Find a few items that are very close to your item and set your price there.

If you're looking for a quick sale, find an approximate search match and sort by time left. Look for items that likely have bids on them with under 2 hours left. You can tell they probably have bids if the current auction bid is unusual price, because the Auction system automatically increments by 5%. An initial bid of 200,000 would increment to 210,000. A second bid would increment to 220,500. No one* would set their minimum auction price to 220,500 so that means there's a bid on it. That means someone somewhere is willing to pay at least that much for the item. Set your buyout price a bit above the current bid price for a similar item and you'll sell really quick.

* This is why I usually make my minimum bid price an unusual starting number so it appears as though someone is bidding on the item which will attract attention to the auction.

@ecocd
Thanks for the feedback.

1st - any chance you can post what you do have already? I'm wondering, instead of having you do all the work, maybe this can be a community project.

2nd - as for searching - i do that already to try and get a price but it still seems that 8 times out of 10 I under or over price or just put-up something that Charsi would rather have, thus the request for something like this.

3rd - you can tell if there's a bid on something if the current bid amount, when you try to bid, is the same as the current low bid - if that case its the minimum the seller established. If the price goes is higher than the current minimum bid then there's a real bid on the item. I've seen a ton of people starting to post at weird amounts to try and make people think there's a bid on an item already.

@baccarat0809
Thanks for the tip on minimum bids! I'll definitely be using that from now on.

If you're hoping to be able to price something precisely on the first try, you're not going to find that anywhere. Everyone makes mistakes, though most of us try to make them on the upper end. If you're worried about getting a fair price, that's what the auction functionality is for. Do your best to make sure the auction ends in a time when the AH will be active. Set your Buyout at the upper end of the spectrum of similar items and your minimum bid at the low end. You'll only get what people are willing to pay for your item. If that means no bids, then it wasn't worth anything. :)

I'm not looking to post what I have yet, because I want to ensure it's presentable and accurate the first time through. I'm also hoping to have it posted as a Guide if it's useful enough. Most pairs of eyes will only read something once so it needs to be complete when it first posts.
