how important is it?
is there a calculator out there that will show you dmg reduction based on resist and armor?

if you hover your mouse over the numbers in your invenrory/stats tab, you can see the % of damage reduction provides by both armor and restistances

i am not sure if you have to set advanced tooltip on (in options/gameplay) to see them

in short, i'd say it gets pretty darn important as you advance in inferno

thanks for the reply... i'll take a look ingame..i just realized i posted this in the wrong place...
would you sacrifice something else to get +armor? or is it one of those things that is "nice to have?"

I wouldn't sacrifice any stat to get +armor, it's just something you would additional to your item. As i see you are a wizard, its not as important for a wizard unless you are running a Melee Build since you are generally doing ranged combat.

It's definitely something you would want to consider, also note that Strength attributes are 1 strength = 1 Armor so you could stack all your items with +INT as well as +STR

dmg reduction (armor) = armor/(armor+3000)
dmg reduction (resist) = resist/(resist+300)

so as you can see, the reduction from both armor and resist are the same equation, except armor has 10x the value of resist. The general rule of thumb is going to be 10 armor = 1 resist. The rule of thumb to maximize efficacy/efficiency is going to be to try to get 10x your resist with armor, IE if you have 700 resist, you want 7000 armor. This will optimize full damage reduction.

Let's say you wanted 50% from armor and 50% from resist: this would give you 75% overall damage reduction. You could also go 40% from armor and 60% from resist (or vice versa) and get 76% overall damage reduction, which is pretty much the same. However, let's say you were coming up from 40% from armor and 50% from resist. If you balanced armor, you would only need 1000 armor (from 2000 to 3000) to reach 50/50. If you tried to go 40% with armor, but you tried to go from 50% to 60% on resist, it would take 150 more resist (from 300 to 450). So in this situation, 1000 armor would give you pretty much the same benefit as 150 resist.

Ultimately, it depends on the class and your specs. Sometimes it's easier to get 150 resist than 1000 more armor. I know for wizard, you have the prismatic armor, which can really buff resists.

TLDR: if you have more than 10x armor than resist, go for resist. If you have less, go for armor.
