Crafting Flawless Star Emerald - Profitable?

I just had a plan for Flawless Star Emerald drop, I could sell this for 2.5 mil or learn the pattern and craft and sell the gems and potentially make more in the long run?

Looking at the cost to make the Flawless Star Emerald (2mil +) vs the selling price of 2.5 mil each -20% AH fee the profit on these is not that much and it would take a while to recover the big payout I could get immediately. Is anyone else here crafting these and how long does it take to sell one and is it worth crafting these for profit? ie could I make and sell 10 in a day assuming I have the mats and gold?

Thanks.

You will almost always make a profit, but it's so small that it's not worth the time. Plus, these gems won't sell immediately (they sell pretty fast, but not immediately). So you can't do this like, 100 times a day or something.

Assuming you have the plan already, it costs 1.6 M in crafting and 81 FS. FS are at about 5100 so the cost is about 2.01 M. With the not-insignificant cost of tomes of secrets also, it's about 2.05 M. Flawless Stars are selling for about 2.45 M; after the Blizzard 15% cut, you are looking at a sale of 2.08 M. That's 30k gold (slightly more or less depending on exact costs). Given the time it takes to buy the gems, craft, put the gem up for sale, and wait for the sale, 30k might as well be a loss.

I think the most I've made doing this was like 100k. I was only able to do this a few times though because gem prices started to fluctuate soon afterwards and the relatively high priced Flawless Stars were not selling very quickly.

Cost to make Flawless Star Emerald - 2,098,684
Current Sell Price - 2,502,709
After gold auction house cut - 28,619

You make very little on gems unless they are in high demand. Right now a Radiant Star Emerald sells for 17,048,000 which is 2.8 mil less then what it costs to make. It is almost to the point where it is cheaper to buy then make the top gems.

@Fodder

It's not almost to the point... IT IS to the point. Which is weird because there aren't any other means of obtaining those gems other than crafting them. So my only logical thought is that people bought them when they were REALLY cheap or when it was cheaper to craft them. Either that or some people are blindly crafting them at a loss of 2.8 M gold each time XD.

The fast gold is selling the plan, keeping it may not be immediate profit but sometimes being able to make something for less long term is worth more than a instant profit.

What you need to decide is if the ability to make the gem forever is worth more than 2.5mil today. That will depend on if you need gold now for something that will improve your gaming, or if being able to to make a higher quality gem gives more benefit long term. You also need to factor in the ability use the Square and F-Sq gems you find and if you want to take. If later you are going to want to be able to make perfect or radiant star emeralds the flawless is a prereq.

Good luck with what you decide.

I agree with @tigs completely.

You may only earn 30k from crafting and selling the flawless stars on the AH, but you're saving 400k if you want them for yourself. If you have a friend with a Perfect Star Emerald recipe, then crafting your own 3 Flawless Star Emeralds saves 1.2 million gold. Create 2 Perfect Star Emeralds and you're already ahead of selling the plan. Find a way to craft all the way up to Radiant Star Emerald and that Flawless Star Emerald plan has saved you 3.6 million Gold.

If you don't ever want to craft a high-level Emerald, sell the plan. If you believe you'll have a reason to craft 5 flawless star emeralds throughout the game, teach it to the jeweler. That's why I bought one on the AH.

Thanks for the input, I'm still on the fence with this, when I first got the plan I thought it would be a gold making bonanza, but when I looked at the costs associated with the production of the gem and the ah cut it made me think twice.

Its the cut that kills me, if it wasn't so high it would be worth it, even if each one was made at 100k profit, it would take 20 sales to break even.

I'm happy getting the drop, but the time and effort to produce a singe gem for only ~30k profit doesn't seem worthwhile, not to mention the risk of the market crashing and having to sell at a loss, but on the other had, I'd hate giving a a potentially money making plan for a quick buck.

If I do decide to start crafting I think the trade channel would be best bet, I could sell for 2.3 - 2.1mil and give someone a deal while still making a good profit, but that always is risky due to scams.

Rule of Acquisition number 62:

The riskier the road, the greater the profit.

I decided to learn the recipe, in the long run it's probably a better idea.

That being said, catch me in game and I can craft you a Flawless Star Emerald with your mats (3 Star + 12 tomes + 100k NPC) + however much you would like to tip!

I usually have one one hand for selling msg me and we can work a deal!

FYI if you want to craft these for profit I offered to buy them at 20k above sale price after ah cut (680k as the were posted at 770k). Ended buying 4 for 2.5 mil.

You will never make lots of gold by crafting+selling gems on the AH, if you could then everyone would start doing it and then it would no longer be profitable. Drops on gems are way too high and demand is way too low since people can reuse the same gems infinitely. There isn't really any situation where gems will ever be some reliable cash cow. You are better off just buying flawless square gems when they are priced low and selling when they are high.

Not a good idea. Craft for self or for friends, not for profit.

In my experience, every time that I've crafted, it hasn't been worth it at all.
Even if I have the recipe for gems, I buy them anyway

I usually craft if I have enough flawless squares from farming, otherwise I'll just buy them. It always surprises me when I see commodities being sold for a loss on the AH.
