Flawless Square Emeralds. Huh?!

So why oh why are people suddenly buying off my flawless square emeralds at 2200 to 3000k? Sometimes as soon as it lists, bam! its gone. Botters must know something...

I swear there's an insider or two at blizzard telling his friends what to buy in preparation for upcoming patches...I will take off my tin foil hat now.

My bad. I meant 2200 - 3000. I get excited sometimes.

It could be speculation considering they were up around 5-6k somewhat recently. It could also be b/c there's a pretty constant need for them. If I get a socketed item when leveling a character, I'll sometimes buy a flawless square regardless of the price if I don't have any in stash. Spending an extra 2-4k doesn't really matter if you're only buying a few.

Yeah. That sounds likely. Just haven't had much luck with them before. I'm almost sold out within a week after having no luck for the past few weeks.

I'm necroing this thread because I've seen some weird behavior on Flawless Square Emeralds over the past four days. The prices are fluctuating by 20% (3900-4900) within seconds. I've been pulling in 4.8-6% profit by crafting up to Star or Perfect Star since Saturday when I can get 243 below about 4100 Gold / Flawless Square emerald. That works out to about 300k Gold per Perfect Star Emerald and well over what I can make farming (and a different monotony to break up the normal monotony). None of the other gems see that kind of swing so I'm a little baffled. I know I'm not getting screwed by accidentally buying a stack at 4900 so if someone is trying to scam the market they're doing a poor job of it.

Any ideas on why the market is so volatile on Flawless Square Emeralds lately?

you should be selling anything you're not using. They don't do you any good sitting in your inventory.

They are back to 2800 according to AH tracker but punching in the numbers for crafting them up to higher gems you can make a profit at that price.

I don't have the gold funds or nerves to do it though

The only thing I can think of was banning the bots so (a) not supply is down from farming bots, (b) the new gold find bots need Emeralds for their helms and cheap socketed Armor.

I recently sold 109 flawless square emeralds for 5,200 each then I used the profits to buy 633 flawless square topaz' at about 300 gold each. I calculated that I needed 633 more flawless square topaz' to turn on of my stars into a radiant star.

What I forgot to calculate was how many tomes of secrets I would need for all that crafting. I ran out not long after making my first pefrect star and now I am waiting for the price of ToS to go back down so I can finish the job.

This happened to me and I've never attempted to craft gems again. You guys can have that.

Crafting gems for profit only makes sense for the relatively poor, anyway. The best returns are always about 5% and that's usually at the Flawless Star level so between 2 and 3 million Gold for a profit of about 100k-200k. If 200k Gold doesn't make a dent in your bank account, it's not a great idea. I usually hover around 8-12 million so I generally notice the difference if I spend an hour crafting over the course of a weekend.

Use this: http://www.diabloahguide.com/the-ultimate-gem-cost-calculator/

I use it to double check almost any time I plan on crafting. It takes roughly 10 seconds to input the numbers, you could even use the AH tracker here to figure it out.

In my opinion, the current FSE prices reflect the inelastic demand working against a dwindling supply as fewer players continue to play until the next patch.

I would expect the price to dip once 107 hits and slowly crawl back up as players go through the process of trying Dueling and getting bored again.

That's exactly what happened last patch. But I don't understand why. More players, more players needing gems, shouldnt gem prices rise? Or are those people coming back the ones farming the fse and fueling the oversupply? There was a marked decline leading up to the patch as well though. Peak of 3k, drop to 400g, and rise to 5k within a week or two.

I remember because I had 10m in fse bought on the way down. Starting at 1k all the way to 400g.

The latter, I think.

Unless you don't care about money or honestly believe that having 58 Dex matters enough to spend 20M+ on it, there's no reason to ever have more than two R Star Emeralds. As players return, most of them probably already have a pair of R Stars and will simply sell what they find because the price is high.

I think most players who are currently regularly playing now are hoarding everything they get. Less supply in the market.
