Some maths.

I don't know how many of you are tracking your characters over at DiabloProgress.com

I only recently (Maybe a week or 2 ago) discovered this place, so for now it's quite fun to see how I'm doing in overall. (i.e miles and miles from the top)

But as an engineer and someone who likes the background math I always like to calculate my own numbers.
I have an excell sheet that I use to calculate unbuffed EHP and DPS.

So far I can match the diablo progress EHP exactly. (Excluding ranged/melee/elite damage reduction)

But my DPS is a bit off.
So does anyone know the formula for unbuffed DPS for dual-wielding?

On a side note I can also calculate the displayed battle.net profile DPS for 1H weapon + shield. But this depends on the skills you are using, so I actually stopped trying to match this. Unbuffed DPS seems a much easier number to calculate.

If you are dual-wielding do you simply take the average DPS and attack speed from your 2 weapons, or is there some additional trickery to it?

Some detail:
Step 1.
calculate my attacks per second.
Att/s = Wpn Att/s * (1+(Attack Speed Item Bonuses % + 15% dual wield bonus) / 100)

Step 2.
calculate my average damage.
AveDmg = (weapon dmg Max + weapon dmg Min)/2 + (all item max bonus + all item min bonus)/2

Step 3.
caclulate my raw DPS
rawDPS = AveDmg * Att/s

Step 4.
Add the crit chance and crit damage to the mix.
Crit Dmg Portion = rawDPS * critChance%/100 * critDmg%/100
DPS = rawDPS + critDmgPortion.
(OR if you like)
DPS = rawDPS*(1+(critChance%/100 * critDmg%/100))

Step 5.
Multiply this value with your stat modificiation (ie. Dex if you are a monk/DH, str for Barb and int for WD/wiz)
unbuffed DPS = DPS * stat/100

Ok, so you might have noticed that nowhere did I mention my second weapon.
So this is how I tried to handle it.
I did step 1 - 5 for each weapon separate, and then I simply took the average of the 2.
(wpn1 unbuffed DPS +wpn2 unbuffed DPS)/2

I also just to double check I tried to take the average for Att/s after step 1. And the average for dmg after step 2.
And then work with those 2 values for step 3, 4 and 5.
This gives me a slightly different number.

But neither of these 2 numbers matches up with the unbuffed DPS as calculated by the diabloprogress guys.

So... math boffins away!!! What am I missing/messing up?

Maths!!

I am lazy to calculate my own DPS, and in fact I only recently knew about the magic of crit/ crit dmg/ attack speed. Without looking at your formulae in great details, maybe you can try this:

Strip yourself naked. I recommend you to do this to your toon, not yourself. Uncheck also passive skills which might boost your DPS somehow.

Then, slowly add mainhand and measured against diabloprogress. Repeat this with off-hand only. Then, add both mainhand and offhand. Once you are satisfied at this stage, then only you add other armor pieces........one by one if necessary and check at each stage.

If it doesn't even add up when you are naked, you might want to try a few other mainhand/ offhand just to check / exclude various noises e.g. simplest case is both weapons are with no other stats other than non-elemental damage and empty socket and LoH/ LS etc. Maybe try some low level blue/ white weapon for example. That should easily tell you the simple impact of DW. If it still doesn't work, maybe check other site other than diabloprogress.

Does the above sound to be a sensible approach? Only downside is that you need some patience. The upside is.......you will leave no stones unturned. All armors will be accounted for.........one by one. If you manage to tally it, then you might be able to fine tune your formulae.

@Metta posted about this a few months ago and you can take a look at his thread.

Metta hasn't been active in a while (same as me, really), but I imagine he/she will be active again at some point. Diablo has a tendency to just get into your bloodstream.

I've given up trying to match in-game dps and I don't really care about it, anyway. It's much more important to determine the weapon damage of each weapon separately (calculated the same way as 1H, but with a +15% attack speed modifier) and determine which skills use primary hand weapon damage and which skills alternate between primary and offhand. For DH, for instance, there are three skills that only use your primary weapon damage (Fan of Knives, Companion, Rain of Vengeance) and the rest use whichever weapon swings or fires next (one of my biggest pet peeves of the game, btw). Weapons swings always alternate hands no matter how long you've spent between attacks.

It's notable that Critical Hit Damage and Life Steal / LoH stats on each weapon apply to both weapons. This is the most important reason to dual wield since Shields can't have either and the reason Radiant Star Emeralds are worth so much (Shields meanwhile get CC and AR). As Metta notes, Echoing Fury is strange, because its modifier is specifically "adds +.22 attacks per second" which applies to both weapons just like CD and LOH. That's the reason everyone uses an Echoing Fury as they level up their gear.

Damn, I miss @Metta.

@Bort, Metta is from your field, so you two might be able to converse over a same platform!

@Stukthrtl

I do not recommend you to do it in front of the computer in fear of radiation, unless you have a functioning webcam to nullify the effect.

@Metta you solved my equation problem in your old thread. Apparently I just have to learn to search the forums better. ;)
