A series that spans several games, it’s fair to say that Diablo has delivered more often than not. There’s a reason why people rave about the game on forums, and Blizzard’s glowing reputation is partly due to games like it. There are some special moments in the games, some enthralling stories, and the game provides a stern test. Diablo wouldn’t be the same without some of the special characters that have contributed to its success, though.

After all, without memorable characters, so many games wouldn’t be as iconic as they are today. For example, the various installments of Mario Kart would immediately put people off if Mario or Luigi weren’t featured, Roderika is a key character in Elden Ring, and popular slot titles like Wolf Gold from Pragmatic Play wouldn’t look right without the game’s wolf characters. The same applies to some of Diablo’s instantly recognizable characters, with both good and evil contributing to the game’s overall offering. Let’s take a brief look at just some of them below.

Griswold

You’ll struggle to find a Diablo gamer who doesn’t have fond memories of Griswold. A helpful character from the first ever Diablo game, the beloved smithy in Tristram is always open for a chat, and success in the game simply wouldn’t have been possible without his input. Griswold’s demise was particularly sad, though, with his zombie character coming to the fore in Diablo 2. Still, without Griswold, there’s a strong argument to suggest that Diablo wouldn’t have drawn as many people in when it was first released.

Lilith

A character associated with various installments from the series, Lilith’s impact is impossible to forget. The daughter of Mephisto, the creator of Sanctuary, is a primary antagonist with many layers to her. While she is ultimately a villain, it’s impossible not to be captivated by Lilith’s behaviors. An unpredictable presence with a powerful backstory, the mother of the Nephalem is easily one of the game’s most important faces.

Deckard Cain

A character many gamers are aware of, Deckard Cain is a mentor figure and lore-keeper who has more than played his part in Diablo’s unwavering appeal. One of the last members of the Horadrim, his knowledge of ancient evils is essential while playing the game, and he particularly shines in the third version of the series.

The Butcher

As his name suggests, you don’t really want to be messing with The Butcher. Arguably the most formidable boss from the first Diablo game, this terrifying beast is hard to see off. His return in Diablo 3 created plenty of excitement, although gamers were soon reminded of his undisputed power further down the line. Also featured in the fourth installment of the game, The Butcher is a boss nobody relishes coming up against.

Marius

The voice of Diablo 2, Marius certainly suffered from bad luck during his time in the series. A character Diablo gamers certainly grew to like, it’s hard not to feel for Marius when suffering continually heads his way. Baal obviously ends up taking his life and wreaks havoc from there, but there is no denying just how important Marius is.

Diablo

We couldn’t really forget Diablo, could we? The title character of the game, Diablo is usually hard to locate until he shows himself in the final part of each game. When he eventually turns up, though, it’s hard to ignore the impact he makes. He is beatable, though, but his power can be felt immediately. Likewise, this complex character is a bit odd, particularly as he rarely leaves Soulstone, although he isn’t a character any knowledgeable fans of the game take lightly.
