I'm banking on PvP skills, dmg, deductions, nerfs,will be PvP only. I think it won't carry over to the whole game, just arena.

This right here. Jay said that there will be no specific gear set. However, no mention of reduced or altered abilities. Similar to how SC2 has different units usable in campaign vs PVP, I think this will happen with skills in D3's PVP.

There were a couple builds in D2 that stun locked the other player. Smiters could stun lock the player unless they had a lot of faster hit recovery. There were a couple others too that I can't remember.

I've never been a huge fan of PVP. D2 always just seemed to be whoever hits the other person first wins, and that isn't fun to me, it's just boring and pointless.

Yes, if stunning is at all possible in pvp, then it does become totally pointless cause whoever hits first pretty much automatically wins...which is why I thought they made it impossible to do in D2. Guess I was wrong. Then again, I never played PvP anyway, so it's not surprising that I got my info wrong...

Not true - everyone has CC breaks of some sort. DH's with lots of disc or barbs with wrath wouldn't have much of an issue. Wizards using fracture and mirror images literally can have 100% constant cc immunity with no special gear or situational skills.

@bort @h311o @eastdragon42

I have a personal vendetta against you all. I'm going to kill you when PVP comes out!

With no pvp gear what do you think will be the reward for winning, losing, or just playing?

Banners for certain. We know there's a store of sorts from recently leaked code and images unless those were a hoax, but I doubt it. Presumably people will earn points or something for winning which can be used to purchase objects. Given that it would be extremely easy to abuse the system (we lose to you, you lose to us!), they can't offer prizes of any consequence. If they implement tournaments at some point, however, then they probably could offer a meaningful prize.

If there aren't externally player-arranged tournaments with prizes, though, I'll eat my Mempo.

I imagine a ranged vs melee pvp will be a cat and mouse game - melee has the advantage only if it can get close. With that said, I'm having trouble thinking of ways monks and barbs can get close to a well geared DH. DH's have hungering arrow that require no aim and can kite several times with no cooldown using vault/smokescreen. With monks, maybe a combination of inner sanctuary/dash/serenity can get you face to face, but barbs have no invulnerability spells and Leap/Ancient Spear have cooldowns.. I wonder.

Assuming that we all don't just get 1-shotted, then in any organized PvP that I've been involved in requires concentrated and coordinated disabling of 1 opponent and the focusing dmg on another. So, you can look at gear to help reduce the chance/duration that you will be disabled or have enough defensive stats that you can survive the rush. Having said that, I honestly think that when PvP initially releases, damage will be too high so it may just be about who can get the quick jump on their opponent (teleport-nova-boom or WotB-groundstomp-earthquake or whatever).

Bottom line-I would not speculate on gear now. I think it's safe to say that PvP will go through several significant patches before it settles.

This is a message board on the Internet, you realize. If we're not here to wildly speculate about the future, why are we here at all?

@ecocd

excellent point lol. Eventhough @phamalot makes a good point as well. Who knows what Blizz will nerf or buff these days. The only thing you can say about their practices is that they have been slow moving and two steps behind what needs to be addressed. That said I think they are moving in the right direction. My prediction is that PvP on PTR will be an absolute mess that will go on for a few months and eventually they will balance it out somewhat so that most classes are reasonably happy.

I'm not a Blizzard apologist in any way shape or form but I personally wouldn't want to be on the development team for this one.
