1.0.7 Strategies

What plans does everyone have for the impending patch? I know details aren't out yet, but a big influx of players is a great time to buy on the cheap and then sell for a profit.

What is everyone thinking? Gems? Crafting materials? Low levels items? I've given thought to all, but haven't got a clue which way to go.

My money is on the brims. Maybe WD or DH items as those classes are still overlooked as an uber killer necessity and may eventually get real buffs.

Remember that time on MP10 ubers when someone said: "We have three CM's Wizards, go find a WD or a DH." Yeah, I don't remember that either.

One thing I am betting on for PvP is shields. Obviously, shields are pretty useless right now, but if they keep the damage scaling similar to what exists right now, shields are going to be pretty useful for PvP.

Another thing I look at is items with chance to stun, chance to freeze, and chance to fear. In conjunction with high attack speed, these properties could be pretty useful in PvP.

It's all speculation though, so I don't go crazy, but if I see some really good deal, I just buy it. Worst comes to worst, I just vendor since it didn't cost much anyway.

I'd also bet on level reduced items if this brings in new player base.

I've also been looking at chance to freeze, and just realized it spawns on Barb belts. Seems like a pretty narrow market, but I can't think of a single barb who couldn't use a chance to freeze.

If shields become useful, Helm of Commands could become a good buy. The decision for most duelers will pretty much be, do you want 9% attack speed (Mempo) or 8% block (HoC)? Thing is, there are so many Helms out there I'm not sure what opportunities there will be outside of the highest of the high end ones. That's the best chance I see right now for Brims to increase in price for more than 12 hours.

Since it's going to PTR, we'll have a good idea pretty quickly of what is useful and what isn't. Just remember that they'll be tweaking it so if there's a dominant strategy Tuesday, it might be gone by Thursday. During the PTR, I wouldn't hold any PvP-type gear for more than the 36 hour auction window, if not shorter.

Edit: @Khan I doubt they'll be showing DH's much more love. They already had their patch with 1.0.5. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the DH's are pretty much set now. WD were so far out of whack, they may get more buffs in 1.0.7. Maybe it will turn out both of them are killer PvP classes so everyone will be endlessly complaining about how PvP was ruined by DH and WD.

I was actually planning on build a sort of troll monk awhile back and stack as much EHP gear on it as possible and make DPS a secondary concern. I'm talking like five, maybe 10 million EHP plus on the guy. If I get more than 10 million EHP on it I'd have the highest EHP amount on a monk in the world haha.

Gotta put on items like two Justice Lanterns (one current, one legacy), a Helm of Command, massive vitality, and massive resists.

But my plans where shortly cancelled when Justice Lanterns are kind of expensive.

I originally posted this in a General discussion thread, but I think it's particularly relevant here. It concerns the high dps Spectrums that can be found in Whimsyshire.

It's not the difficulty that's important, it's the affix levels. In Inferno with at least MP1 (for Act 1 and 2, but only MP0 for Acts 3 and 4), all items have the possibilities to drop with the best affixes. That's the reason you get such a high dps on a clvl 30 item. This isn't possible on other low-level items since only ilvl 58 items drop in Inferno now. To get one of the 50 million Gold 600 dps Spectrums you need to be running at MP1 to get an alvl 63 min damage affix.

This is clearly an oversight by Blizzard and I would bet that it's going to be fixed as early as 1.0.7. If you have money to invest, a high dps Spectrum may be a good speculation opportunity, because like Nat's Legacy sets, they'll probably never drop again after 1.0.7 hits. If the PTR notes in the coming weeks include a note about fixing Spectrum drops you could see a 100+% return on investment overnight. I doubt the 300 dps ones will jump that much in value, but the high end certainly could.

If it is fixed, then when the next ban wave comes, botters may lose some of the existing market's high dps Spectrums. Since no more would ever drop, the 500-600 dps Sepctrums will be worth even more.

Now look forward to the expansion pack in 2014-2016. There will have been a dozen ban waves by then each reducing the high dps Spectrum market further. Now imagine the expansion creates two new classes. 10,000s of players will all want a Level 60 Tiger Warrior Princess Shaman as soon as possible. What's the best way to get the fastest Lvl 60? High dps Spectrum!

Assuming Blizzard does see the alvl 63, clvl 30 Spectrums as an oversight, the best long-long-long investment in the entire market right now is the high dps Spectrum. There will always be a market for them as long as the Diablo 3 servers are running no matter what other items are released. A Patch 1.0.6 500 dps Spectrum that costs 40 million Gold now could be briefly worth billion(s) by the time an expansion hits (of course, by then, inflation may mean you can get 10 billion Gold for 1 USD). That same 40 million Gold Spectrum could be worth 80 million Gold by the end of the month.

@ecocd That's a pretty good long term play. Right now, spectrums in the 400's to 600 dps range aren't priced too bad if anyone wants to start picking them up.

I have never heard of the Spectrum sword before. It is not listed in the game guide on Blizzard's site so I had to do some forum searching for it. Here is a picture:

I am surprised I have never found it before. Back when I was keyfarming (I am XP farming now) I would start my Act 1 key runs in Whimseyshire because they are always 4-5 elite packs and I get a lot of gold from all the clouds.

I use an ultra low level one with 100 dps from lvl 30 to 45 then I switch to a 1000dps lvl reduced sword till I hit 60. The spectrum is very useful.

I don't know, I don't think that it's an oversight or will get "fixed." I suppose it is possible, but the same thing happened to the Hamburger where you can find them with 500+ dps, and I think the odds of them not at least discussing it for two different items are pretty low. Plus it's not like they're really anything game breaking. I have a feeling it'll be like the same situation of Manticores, where the two socket thing might not have been intended, but was decided to just go with it anyway.

Well, I pulled the trigger and bought a 599.2 damage spectrum for 77M. HUGE Risk here. We'll see if it pays off. Its not like I was using or needed the gold, but I'll re-list it once 1.07 hits for 1B or who-knows, maybe just hold it and see what happens.

I like the of having a "long-term" investment strategy as lord knows i have no intention of leaving this game. As much as I think they could have done sooooo much more, and made the game a lot more AD&D like, its better than D2 (except for the stat tree - thats really the only part of the game I hate) and I'm in it to win it - or whatever.

Big thanks for pointing that out.

Went searching for one today, the wife found a 446 dps Spectrum first run. We are not speaking at the moment. :)

Patch notes preview is up. The impact on the market:

Rubies will now increase attack speed
They've jumped in value and will probably rival Emeralds for the time being, but overall, I can't see anything short of a ridiculous attack speed buff from them making them preferable to Emeralds for the vast majority of players.

The patch notes mention they'll be buffing underused Wizard skills and Monk skills in 1.0.7.

It sounds like Hydra uses attack speed so if they buff it enough to be useful, socketed IAS weapons without CD are going to be very useful for Wizards. I can tell you from experience with my Sentries as a DH, you can feel even a 4% difference in IAS on your Sentries so there's a chance a good, socketed IAS dagger may end up better than a good Chantodo's Will for a dedicated Hydramancer

They're going to be upping the experience for Monster Power.
As they have it stated right now, the rewards are going to be pretty stiff. MP1 will increase experience 25% and MP2 will increase experience 50%. Leoric's Signet is going to lose a ton of value. I doubt they'll drop in price overnight tonight since it will still be many weeks, if not months until the patch actually hits. That said, I worked really damn hard for mine and even I have mine up for sale right now. At worst, I lose 3 million Gold in the deal when I want to buy one back. Edit:Since posting this 30 minutes ago, low end Signet prices are down about 10% already. Maybe they will drop overnight. I got my Signet sold at just under pre-preview prices so I'm happy.

As of right now, the new rumored crafting is account-bound crafting requiring Demonic Essence which can only drop from Elites in Inferno. If that's the only additional crafting they add, Brimstones may jump for a bit, but they aren't going to go back to sustain their heady 200k days, because no one can make AH profit off of the new crafting recipes.

Nice. Hopefully brims will be part of the recipe...

Got my rubies!

Edit: In case anyone thought I was bluffing...

5703 Rubies. That's enough to craft 3.5 Marquise Rubies. I have no idea what he's going to do with so many of them.

I see some other market implications.

Gold value will rise as crafting will have the best in slot items. (Huge gold sink.)

Inferno materials will rise as you'll need them to make your best in slot items.

Rares should drop in value as crafted will be better.

Top end legendaries might even lose value, like Ice Climbers.

I guess the Prices will drop down after 3 or 4 Weeks after patch because everyone realize that the new items are too randomly and expensive - at the moment only one stat of 6 is fix ?? Right ??
