So what will my 120k worth of brims be worth? Anyone care to fathom a guess?

Maybe they become the new currency? Provided of course that everything isn't BOA as some peeps think.

Brimstones - Almost less than worthless

Demonic Essences seem to be the only thing worth getting pre expansion.

Gems are the new currency. 729 Flawless Squares and 20m gold to make that Radiant Star. Forget marquise.

I don't think I've picked up enough gems to make more than one or two gems. I've only picked up enough gold to make 6 or 7. They will be scarce. Especially ladder.

Are they going to save any announcements for BlizzCon? Kinda surprised that they are releasing so much information.

I expect a lot more at Blizzcon, they have been telling us to look forward to it.

PvP
Ladders
Gheeds Machine
Devil's Hand
Bounty Mode

All these things need to be explained by Blizzard still!

Quite honestly I have huge respect for Blizzard for doing this. I'll be coming back to Diablo for the expansion now. See you guys in six months. (If I don't leave for AmeriCorps.)

Definitely a surprise. Unsure if it's a good move or not on Blizzard's behalf. Though I suspect @Pastamon surmised correctly--everything will become BoA.... :-0

Again, I very highly doubt everything will be bound to account. You have Diablo 2 where the core of the game is focused around playing the game, finding items, improving yourself and if those items don't improve yourself you can trade those items to someone that will benefit from and in return get something you will benefit from. The AH, while not inherently a bad idea for a game like this, did push the game away from that core and Josh, as well as Travis Day way back in May when he was talking on streams made strong implications (Suggestions? Can't think of the right word.) that they were going to do whatever it takes to implement those same core things that made Diablo 2 great into Diablo 3. If you make everything account bound that would literally be doing to exact opposite because you'll no longer be able to trade those items that aren't good for you but for someone else.

First of all.... I honestly did not see this coming. really. I don't think that the AH hurt the game that much....

I have very mixed feelings on this one.
At the moment there are 3 ways go get lots of money / top gear.
1. AH flip. I suck at this, but I know ppl with 30bil+ gold earned mostly from flipping.
2. Buy gold. Easy way out for the working man.
3. Be lucky and loot it.

If no more AH it just becomes (3). So the drop rate and item quality will have to change dramatically to make this work. Now as far as I understand they want to reduce the droprate. So that makes it even worse. I play mp8 mostly, and over the last 10 plevels of my monk I averaged about 10 legs per plevel. I level slower than most guys, but this meant roughly 1 leg per hour played.

Furthermore I absolutely HATE trading in channels / 3rd party stuff. So I will be fully Self-find and friend trades only when this hits. Maybe the clan thing and shared clan stash or something will help solve some problems.

I'm seeing a more wow-like future for Diablo. Most items will be BoA. And I forsee specific bosses dropping specific items. So like in wow you have to run the same raid/dungeon bazillion times to get one BoA BiS item.
But then... WOW still has the ingame AH to fill the gaps.

Personally I think this is a step backwards... but opinions are divided.

*Edit. A more important question now is.
Do I try to cash out?
Or do I try to buy some items so I can enjoy playing MP10 while I can.

Posted by mentok1982 at 09/17/2013 11:59 AM

So demand for items will skyrocket before the Auction Houses are closed which means that prices will be sky-high as well. I might wait till March to sell all the godly items that I find between now and March.

Erm... I disagree on this. Demand will go up today, and decrease as we get closer to the expansion when all items will become instantly useless.

I'm hoping this means that higher tier gems will start falling in higher difficulties since you won't be able to buy the gems anymore. As it stands right now it takes such an insane amount of time and effort to max out your gems that its really not worth the diminishing returns you get.

Just what comes to my mind when reading about AH closure :(

Don't forget about the Tomes (1.600 or 1.700 don't want to calculate^^)

True, maybe not everything...but without an easy/convenient channel to actually trade or sell items in-game, it might as well be. I'm pretty much in the same camp as @Bort in that I level slower than most players and dislike the idea of trading with strangers in channels or going through 3rd party web sites (never did so in D2, & doubt I will start to do so in D3). So I too will probably become a fully self-find player, or only do the very rare trade with friends on my D3 list...

& yeah, I think upgrading gems in the future will become much more of a pain in the ass. It was kind of nice being able to just instantly buy Tomes of Secret on the AH whenever one needed them...

Still waiting on info at Blizzcon, which they said is gonna be alot, I might just buy the TV promo and watch it since I couldnt go this year. Damn bills. >.<

"If I was a game director" I would sell tomes from vendors now OR make them auto pickup like gold.

I would LOVE more auto pick-up.
In fact, why not an option be able to toggle auto-pickup on all loot types:
Gems (above X grade)
Tomes
Pages
Plans
Gold
White items
Blue items
Rare items
Leg. items

I think there will be a new tier of crafting supplies for level 70 items, along with higher levels of gems dropping ingame.

With the way Blizzard generally handles expansions I don't see anything being worth investing in pre-expansion. Especially if you plan on playing ladder mode.

The end of an era and an interesting experiment. There's no telling how it would have operated if the original dev team hadn't had their heads up their asses - maybe it still would have ended up this way - but at least the next AAA development team that wants to pursue an auction house has an excellent case study.

I hope they realize all of the extraneous stuff the AH gave us like stash space and the ability to see inventories across accounts and implement that in the expansion.

I too hope that higher tier gems will drop.
And an auto-pickup option like @Mehsiah and @Bloodbathe suggested would be a nice add. In addition to that they also could add the possibility to choose the minimum item level for auto-pickup

The auto-pickup still only matters if we're seeing them drop like popcorn as we are now. I don't mind clicking to pick up DE's since they're valuable to me. If gems and other mats are as relatively rare as DEs are now, I don't think auto-pickup is really necessary.

I'd like to have to option to set certain things to auto pick up. That way each player could configure it however they wanted.

If I could just pick up level 63 items as easily as gold it would make farming so much better.

From a game design perspective, auto pickup is pretty peculiar. What's the point of having a resource drop from the monsters and have it automatically picked up? At that point, it would be much more straightforward to have the resource that's being dropped instead be generated just like experience points would. It makes sense from a flavor perspective to have Gold drop in D3, because you use it to pay shopkeepers for goods and services. It wouldn't make sense from a flavor perspective to have shopkeepers accept "Monster Killing JuJu Points" in payment. From the flavor perspective, it likewise makes no sense to have Gold automatically picked up, but it's a concession they made in the name of easier gameplay.

The more auto pickup options you include, the further you stretch flavor for gameplay concessions. At some point, it's no longer a game.

It wouldn't be that difficult to add in some kind of flavor element that does the actual picking up. Aren't they talking about having an item that spawns a treasure goblin that picks things up for you?

Since the creature is doing your bidding I don't think it would be much of a stretch to allow for you to specify what kind of items it picks up.

Then you basically have a little minion following you around, rushing to pick up your loot so you can focus on fighting monsters.

In the beta they had pets that picked up gold for you, they were summoned from companion scrolls. With the data mined information that vanity pets are making a comeback, I would not be surprised if they could pick up gems for you or something.

Also saw D3 is getting a "pet/item" for ordering Blizzcon on TV/stream.

Based on how crappy the DH ferrets are at picking up gold, I believe everyone will be severely disappointed in how well the treasure hording goblin works in practice.

Taking this even further.... why then bother with creating low level items in the first place. Why not have a mechanism that instead of dropping an item simply add the item's "salvaged" materials directly into your stash.

Obviously they won't do this... They still generate White and Blue items that no-one ever uses. So I doubt they will add auto-pickup anything. (other than the goblin thingy, gold and globes)

I want my Witch Doctor to be followed by:

1. A goblin that pickups white items.
2. A murlock
3. Ferrets or other vanity pet.
4. The demon slave from the Maximus sword
5. Zombie dogs
6. The Gargantuan
7. The fetish army
8. My chosen follower
9. Adria
10. Leah

That sounds like a party! If vanity pets are a thing, you could technically have all those following beings active at the same time right?

EDIT
They should make an acheivement called Big Happy Family. Be followed by 7 or more different creatures or people. It would have to be 7 because the other classes don't have zombie dogs, gargantuans and fetish armies.

@mentok1982. I did something like this. It is as awesome as it sounds. You can substiute the Litany of the Undead/Wailing Host for te Puzzle ring as the Skeletons it generates are much more common. The Skycutter sword summons an Angel so you're want to add that to your list, as well (this or Maximus goes on your follower). Your followers can also equip a Litany ring set for an extra skeleton. If you want to really want to max it out, the Succus-thingie enslavers in Act 3 hold a bunch of naked prisoners hostage that then become really poor followers, but are more numerous than Adria and Leah.

A single hero can generate a truly massive army. Now imagine getting 4 of those WD together (losing the follower, a maximus demon and a Litany Skeleton each), and there wouldn't be a gaming rig on the planet that could handle all of the onscreen display fireworks.
